Can incomplete stories be masterpieces?

It just popped up in my mind all of a sudden. What’s better,

an incomplete story that keeps asking the question, what was next? What if? (What was she going to tell him? Did he get the letter after all those years? If he did, what happened then?)

It let’s you ponder, let’s your imagination run wild. You make the ending whatever you think it to be.

But it never really satisfied me, always kept the curiosity alive.

Or, Stories with a definite end.

(e.g. They both die at the end/Happily ever after/The protagonist defeats the villain…..)

The writer does all the hard work.

You can go to sleep knowing who killed John Smith 😶‍🌫️. You don’t have to torture yourself or curse the writer why didn’t he reveal the killer?

But is it really what we want?

(I don’t know why am I even writing this? I am stuck with not getting a headstart on writing anything. Maybe this will account for a stepping stone? )

But, do let me know what you think.
